Ichiro’s grandfather Masataro Kato was a professional pottery maker in Kasama-city in Ibaraki-prefecture. His father Shigemi Kato grew up in Kasama before moving to the Setouchi region in Yamaguchi-prefecture where he began his creative period as a ceramic artist by expanding the layered decoration technique called kashoku gihou. Ichiro was born in 1972 in Yamaguchi.
Ichiro left Yamaguchi in his late twenties and moved to Kasama in Ibaraki-prefecture to begin exploring ceramic work. After completing a program at the Kasama College of Ceramic Art, he studied for several years as an apprentice of renowned ceramic artist Motohiko Itoh, who continues to be a significant influence on his work. From Itoh, he developed a deep appreciation of an artist’s perspective and creation of work. Following his apprenticeship, he built his first studio in Hitachi Ohmiya-city in Ibaraki.
その後、同地にて近所へ引っ越すものの、再び山口県へ帰郷し現在に至ります。
后来,我搬到附近另一个地方,然后回到我的故乡山口县,直到现在。
After moving to a larger studio nearby, Ichiro returned to Yamaguchi where he continues to live.
When creating his work, Ichiro uses two main techniques. The first is the painting on glaze where fine gold lines are laid over the hard surface of a piece after final firing, then fired again at low temperature. The second is the textile-technique where base paint forms a decorative design over a ceramic surface impressed with the fabric texture of textile.
